Some Bespoke Kitchen FAQs from our MD ~ Frank
We all have our own vision of what a dream kitchen looks like, working with a professional bespoke kitchen designer with experience is essential when you start imagining your new space, it makes such a difference having someone guide you through everything - from the early creative ideas right through to the final touches. That said, I’ve found there are a few simple guidelines that really help bring everything together. One of the most important is what I like to call the “Golden Rule” of kitchen design - it’s the key to creating a space that not only looks amazing but actually works for you day to day.
So, what exactly is the Golden Rule?
For me, it’s all about putting function first - without sacrificing style. It’s about finding that sweet spot between how your kitchen looks and how it performs. I love to create rooms that make you feel good every time you walk in.
So what are the potential design mistakes?
I’ve seen what happens when things go too far in either direction. If you focus only on practicality, the space can feel a bit lifeless. But if you go all-in on aesthetics, you might end up with a kitchen that’s frustrating to use. The goal is to strike the right balance so your kitchen feels just as good as it looks.
So? What is this Golden Rule?
At its core, the Golden Rule is really about harmony - bringing together workflow and design in a way that feels natural. Once you get that right, everything else tends to fall into place.
What are the key elements I should consider?
When I apply the Golden Rule, I often find that many modern kitchen features already do a great job of combining style and functionality.
I’m a big fan of clever storage - things like pull-outs, magic corners and hidden compartments, lots of drawers for easy access. They make everyday life so much easier while keeping everything neatly tucked away, which really helps maintain a clean, cohesive look.
What about new appliances?
Even if your current appliances are still working, upgrading them can completely transform how your kitchen feels. The new Smeg Italian Models tend to be more efficient and better designed. Opting for modern upgrades can make your kitchen more efficient while enhancing the beauty of your space.
What's the difference between bespoke kitchens and standard ones?
From my experience the cost is a major factor, bespoke kitchens usually range anywhere from £25,000 to £120,000, mainly because everything is tailored and made using high-quality materials. A standard kitchen is more budget-friendly, typically falling between £10,000 and £30,000, as it’s based on pre-designed options with less flexibility. However because we are a small family run company based on the Isle of Wight, we can be very competitive. I think of bespoke cabinets as made-to-measure pieces. They’re not off-the-shelf or pre-built, so I can choose the exact size, layout, and features. For me, the biggest difference is flexibility. With a bespoke kitchen, everything is built around specific needs, whereas standard kitchens come with more limitations.
Is a bespoke kitchen worth it?
I always say it depends on what you’re looking for. A bespoke kitchen will usually cost more, but the ability to tailor everything to your needs can make it a really worthwhile investment. For me, it’s about long-term value - if it’s a space you'll use every day for years, it’s worth getting it right.
Can I have any size of cabinets?
One of the things I love about bespoke kitchens is that they’re completely made to fit the space. I can design everything around specific needs and awkward layouts. With standard kitchens, you’re working with fixed sizes, which don’t always make the best use of space.
What is the difference in the materials used?
With a bespoke kitchen, I get to choose exactly what materials I use, often going for handcrafted or premium finishes - we use a lot of solid Oak and Walnut. Standard kitchens tend to have a more limited, pre-selected range, which doesn’t offer the same level of personalisation or quality.
What about design?
This is where bespoke kitchens really shine for me. Every design is unique and tailored to your personal taste. We love producing 360 degree visuals to show you exactly how your new kitchen will feel. Farrow and Ball colours, a huge range of wooden door styles and beautiful worktops.Standard kitchens, on the other hand, feel a bit more generic since they follow set styles.
How long does it take to make the bespoke furniture?
Because everything is made to order, you can expect a bespoke kitchen to take a bit longer - we're usually between 4 and 12 weeks. Standard kitchens are much quicker, often installed within 1 to 2 weeks.
What makes a Bagshots Kitchen look luxurious?
It comes down to a few key things, high-quality materials like marble or quartz, well-designed bespoke cabinetry, and premium appliances. Small details really add up and create that high-end feel. If I want a luxury look, I focus on combining great materials, custom storage, and standout appliances. That’s usually what brings everything together.
So what are the Advantages of a Bespoke Kitchen?
There are quite a few reasons why bespoke is better:
• I can fully customise the space to suit how you live
• The design is completely unique
• Our craftsmanship is much higher quality
• The layout makes the most of every bit of space
• I get full control over materials and finishes

I also notice a clear difference in quality and uniqueness - bespoke kitchens tend to stand out more and feel much more personal.
So what's the process?

Final Thoughts
For me, a bespoke kitchen is all about freedom. I can create exactly what I want, with no real limitations other than budget.
That said, I always remind myself there’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution. Every kitchen should be designed around how it’s actually going to be used. Taking the time to plan properly - and working through the right design - makes all the difference in creating a space that really works.
